Kaipūpū Sanctuary
The jewel in the Crown of Waitohi picton

OUR STORY
Kaipūpū Point Sanctuary was established through the collective efforts of passionate locals. Entrusted with a piece of land suitable to ‘fencing off’ from predators, a small team of volunteers with a vision to save our native species established a predator free sanctuary.
Today those efforts continue with the community group working under the Picton Dawn Chorus umbrella to maintain Kaipūpū as a national ecological treasure for all to enjoy.
SPECIES UNDER OUR CARE
Among our precious residents are penguins, korimako, tūi, wētā, geckos and many more. With water on three sides you may spot some visiting fur seals,
Rimu, miro, tōtara tress as well as ferns and many more varieties of native plant species help make Kaipūpū a haven for biodiversity .
Kaipūpū Sanctuary is only ten minutes by water from Waitohi/Picton. It is free to visit, but as a charity, your donations are welcome.

“A very pleasant small island to walk around. It’s a 10 minute ride by water taxi to the island and then about an hour to walk through the tree ferns and beech trees and manaku and tawa canopy trees. A pleasant walk.”
